Christmas wishes… with a Time Traveller.
In A Time for Everything, Audrey travels through time and visits Michael every year on his birthday.
The cool thing I loved about this from a story angle, was that they were always going to be wherever Michael was on that given day. So, from a creative angle, I could take them, and the time travel adventure, anywhere in the world. Wherever Michael was, Audrey would show up. So, within this time travel tale, they got to have some adventures. There was England and Los Angeles, Ireland and Canada. Birthday celebrations and day to day activities.
The one day I loved the most was recreating Christmas in Jasper, Canada. Christmas is always a visual scene that I love. Growing up in Scotland, a cold country, and moving to Ireland, Christmases and winters have always been the classic cold scenes. But not always with snow! Very rare do we get snow for a few days that it lies on the roads and pavements. But we do get the cold days and nights and hot chocolate and fires. Or maybe soaking wet rain storms.
But I do like the scenic Christmas lights and markets, and decorations and log cabins and boy do I wish it would snow more at Christmas (Except that one December in 2010 when the snow did come and our little village almost shut down, with the rest of the country as there was a grit shortage or some obscure problem in the country! And I of course went into labour!)
So, recreating a Christmas scene in the middle of a time travel romance tale, was a must for me. To tell my ideal Christmas in the guise of Audrey was so much fun.
To head to a luxury log cabin in Jasper Canada, a beautiful place I visited many years ago, and give Audrey a quiet celebration of the day! New fluffy pyjamas and movies on the couch. No work or research. No worries. Just a day off with food and drink and no one interrupting them! Michael even had the place decorated out in traditional red and gold decorations and a tree put up in the cabin, even though it was technically February for them!
Right now, for me, while my kids are young, Christmas is all about Santa and presents in the morning and family dinner whether we are in Ireland or Scotland for the day. We spend the day playing with the kid's new toys and watch some tv and eat chocolates and dinner and dessert and turkey sandwiches. In the next few years, I'd love to take them somewhere like the cabin in Jasper for Christmas vacation and pretend we're in the North Pole! To see the thick snow and do some winter sports and snow ball fights on Christmas morning.
What's your ideal Christmas wish? In the land of fiction and time travel, where there are no limits, no budgets and no worries, no limit to the imagination...
Where would you go and who would you want to spend the day with?
Imagination means the world really can be your oyster!
