Time Travel Stories

Updated: Nov 9, 2021

You should know that I love time travel stories.

That includes alternative reality stories and other dimensions. I don’t know when the obsession started, but I always would imagine being able to control in my past mistakes or in the past of other people. Like, could I make a different decision? Or could I help someone make a different decision based on their regrets?

I would always have the niggling feeling telling me you can’t mess with the past. If I didn’t have that experience, who would I be now? That mistake I made, perhaps gave me the knowledge and confidence not to make a bigger mistake later in life. Therefore, I became obsessed with alternative lives and realities and the branches and sliding doors effect that our decisions in life could make.

Or what if there is just one specific life to live and fate is in charge of everything? No matter what time travel machine I invented in my head, this was my path? Who knows? But heck could I have some fun with it in the fiction world.

Romance books always caught my attention, and I realised I would read any genre as long as it came with romance. Or maybe I was a romance reader that would read any sub-plot? Anyway, I love the idea of changing the history of someone’s relationship or the events that bring them together. I wanted to explore the possibility of couples still meeting. If they still fall in love. If they still make it work! Because I believe in love and friendship and meeting someone your soul recognises at first sight. Be it a friend or a lover. I think when we meet people; we know if they are your kind of personality. If you're going to gel together or not. If you combine that with some fate and alternative reality time bending shenanigans, that’s a story I want to read about.

Audrey Niffenger’s, The Time Travelers Wife, is a classic example of what I love about relationships and travelling through time. With the explosion of Diana Gabolden’s Outlander, something happened in the book world and most romance time travel stories now focus on historical times. I want to read and write about time travel romance in a modern setting. To see things happen in the 80s and 90s in someone’s personal past that could have a direct effect on their life. I want to pop twenty years into the future and see what kind of life is waiting for my characters and heck, they might shout at me they don’t desire that future for themselves. Because when you're at the helm of the characters’ lives, writing and plotting, sometimes destiny steps in and directs those characters somewhere I never even seen coming. The moment characters surprise even the author, and the pain at what’s happening in their world breaks your heart; you know you're onto a good one.

That’s exactly what happened in Stella and David’s story in The Same Time. I never even intended to write their story, but there were so many things I wanted to explain about them. I just started typing. Suddenly I had a new time traveller and method of travelling. When their story took over my life and the direction I was taking them in, I couldn’t help but wonder if fate had just stepped in to show the way!

Go get David and Stella’s book now, and see what you think!
